What is a PDN in LTE?

In LTE (Long Term Evolution), PDN stands for Packet Data Network. It enables internet data communication services for User Equipment (UE), such as smartphones and tablets, allowing access to a wide range of internet-based services like web browsing, email, video streaming, and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Key Components of PDN Connectivity in LTE:

  • PDN Gateway (P-GW): Acts as the interface between the LTE network and external packet data networks, responsible for IP address allocation, policy enforcement, and routing data packets.
  • Serving Gateway (S-GW): Serves as the anchor point for data connections across eNodeBs, routing and forwarding user data packets.
  • Mobility Management Entity (MME): Manages control-plane functions including signaling and security between the UE and the network, crucial for establishing and managing data bearers.
