Can 4G networks support SMS?

Yes, 4G networks can support SMS through two primary methods: SMS over IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) and SG SMS (SMS over NAS message).

Both approaches ensure that 4G networks can effectively support SMS messaging, utilizing the advanced capabilities of LTE technology for efficient message delivery.

SMS over IMS: This method leverages the IP Multimedia Subsystem framework to deliver SMS messages as packets over the LTE network. It is part of the Voice over LTE (VoLTE) suite, allowing SMS to be seamlessly integrated with IP-based communication services. SMS over IMS ensures that messages can be sent and received while maintaining the use of high-speed data services.

SG SMS (SMS over NAS message): This method allows SMS messages to be transmitted directly over the LTE network's NAS (Non-Access Stratum) layer, bypassing the need for IMS infrastructure. SG SMS is particularly useful in scenarios where IMS is not available or when simplifying the delivery of SMS without engaging the full IMS framework.
